Sony NGP (PSP2) revealed. Specs, images and video that summarises the unveilling.

PSP2 The Next Gen PortableNot more than 24 hours ago Sony revealed the first official news of their upcoming handlheld currently dubbed the NGP (Next Gen Portable).

I must admit, I did expect this to be a pure grunt machine that would be focussed on all out graphics with a ridiculously short battery but it would seem i have been proven wrong. Yes it does have very impressive graphics with similar capabilities of the PS3, a 960 x 544 pixel OLED that make the games look amazing. But all this with an expected battery life of up to 10 hours gameplay. If this turn out to be correct then Sony may be right on track with their new handheld.

The Confirmed Sony NGP Features

No UMDs – Sony have decided to follow on from the PSP Go and stay away from the UMD media. It is still to be confirmed exactly how games will be delivered on the NGP but there is a strong chance that downable games will be available.

3G Capability – Enhancing the exoectation of the downloadable games, the NGP will feature 3G capability out of the box for true portable Internet gaming.

Dual Analogue Nubs – I still do not know exactly why this wasn’t included in the first PSP but they finally added the second analogue stick to the NGP for that extra amount of control on the games. Maybe it will finally be possible to play a decent FPS game on these things.

Front and Rear Facing Cameras – Sony have inlcuded cameras on the system which will be heavily involved in the games, not a huge amount has been released about this yet.

Touch Screen and Rear Touch Panel – The Screen on the NGP is a full multi touch screen which puts it on par with the other handhelds on the market. What makes it differ is the rear multi touch panel also. This acts as an extra touch area where the user can control extra elements of the game. This is better explained by watching the video on this post.

Confirmed Game

Sony have ensured that they have a strong line up of games for release. The following are just a few mentione

  • Uncharted
  • Hot Shots Golf
  • Killzone
  • Resistance
  • Wipeout
  • Gravity Daze
  • Little Deviants
  • LittleBigPlanet
  • Monster Hunter
  • Call of Duty

The Handheld War is a whole new ball game

With more and more phones being able to play quality touch capable games on the move thanks to the iphone and android phones. And of course the upcoming release of the 3DS, it is unclear who will come out on top of this handheld war. Not to mention that Sony have also teamed up with Google to create the PSP phone which will allow gamers to play the classic PS1 games on their android phones. It is one hell of a competetive market now with players in the mobile scene that have already got a steaming head start (iphone and android) that I will be posting abot soon. I am hoping this will alter Sony’s strategy of a ridiculous starting price tag on their new hardware. With the only information stated as an “affordable” price tag, we can only wait for them details to emerge.

Video of the Conference

If you want to see the NGP and see some of its gameplay, UI and tech demos, please watch the summarised video of Sonys conference in Japan .

So what do you think the price tag will be? “Affordable”, Expensive? And with the claims going around that it will pull off as amazing graphics as the PS3, this really has a lot to live up to. Ket me know what you think.
